One
of the most scenic drives in Kerr County follows both forks
of the Guadalupe River Trail. Not only will you enjoy a panorama
of natural beauty, you will have the opportunity to visit
many quaint antique stores and shops, a country store, and
see a wide variety of gracious country homes along the way.
The South Fork drive begins in Ingram on Hwy.
39 and travels west, in twisting, up and down fashion to Hunt.
At times, the road becomes a tunnel among giant oaks and cypress.
You will pass many private camps and homes built of native
limestone, obviously designed for the full enjoyment of nature.
Stay on Hwy 39 past Hunt where the South Fork of the Guadalupe
crisscrosses the road numerous times under low water bridges.
At the intersection with Hwy. 83 turn right and stay on Hwy
83 until it intersects with Hwy 41. Turn right on Hwy 41 to
the intersection of FM 1340. Turn right on FM 1340 back to
Hwy. 39 in Hunt. The drive along FM 1340 is very picturesque
as it crisscrosses the North Fork of the Guadalupe. This drive
covers approximately 75 miles.
If you're really into great scenery, don't pass
up the 35 mile trip, via Hwy 16 South, from Kerrville to Medina
in Bandera County. It offers breathtaking "top of the mountain"
views, hairpin curves, craggy canyons and sparkling streams.
If you want to return to Kerrville by a different route, go
through Medina on Hwy 16 to the intersection of FM 2828. Go
left on FM 2828, past the intersection of FM 3240 to Hwy 173.
Take a left on Hwy 173 for the return trip to Kerrville.
The return isn't as dramatic as the outboard
journey, but you will still see some beautiful country. Kerr
and Kimble Counties can brag about having the most beautiful
and scenic section of Interstate 10 in Texas. The 55 miles
of Interstate between Kerrville and Junction provides spectacular
displays of the variety and beauty of the Hill Country. There
are numerous overlooks with easy access for photography, or
just for enjoying the views. |
